Description: This demonstration shows the relationship between pressure, volume, and temperature in an adiabatic compression.
Equipment:
- Fire Syringe assembly
- Piece of Gunpowder Cotton (Grain of rice size)
- Machine oil
Setup Procedure:
- Take the stopper out of the syringe, and drop the piece of gunpowder cotton into the chamber of the syringe. Make sure the cotton is at the bottom of the chamber.
- (Warning: Be careful about how much cotton you put in the syringe, as it will explode if you put in too much in. A good rule of thumb is if you think it might be too much, it is)
Demonstration Procedure:
- It is highly recommended that professors try this out before class to get a feel of how much pressure to use.
- Stand the fire syringe up vertical on the table and insert the metal stopper.
- When ready, push down the fire syringe with a good amount of pressure.
- The gun cotton should ignite. This happens because the volume quickly decreases, and the temperature goes up. Enough to ignite the gun cotton.
