6D20.32-Compact Disk Diffraction and Laser

Description: This demo shows how a CD can be used as a diffraction grating

Equipment:

• Optical bench
• Laser on post
• CD holder with either transparent CD or silvered CD.

Setup Procedure:

1. Insert the laser into the optical bench.
2. Insert the CD stand into the optical bench.
3. Align so the laser will shin on the CD.
4. Setup in the classroom so the diffraction pattern fits on the screen.
5. If using the transparent CD, have it so the laser passes through the CD onto the screen. If using the silvered CD, have it so the laser reflects off the CD onto the screen.

Demonstration Procedure:

1. Turn on the laser and make sure it’s lined up on the CD.
2. (Optional) Turn off the lights.
3. Note the diffraction pattern on the screen.
4. When finished, turn off the laser.
