Description: This demonstration shows a Crookes’ Radiometer.

Equipment:

  • Crookes’ Radiometer
  • Flashlight or sun light

Demonstration Procedure:

  1. Turn on the flashlight and aim it at the vanes.
  2. Note the direction that the vanes move.
  3. Prompt discussion for why it moves the way it does

Note: There are a few explanations as to why exactly the radiometer turns the way it does. The main concept involved is the transfer of momentum between the photons in the beam of light, and the alternating white and black colored surfaces.
